It may be the norm, all right, but now so are all the health problems that result from their use.

Driven by money, this industry isn't going to change soon, if at all. The pharmaceutical companies provide the money, which gives them the power to decide what is eaten and what is not. Even the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), which is supposed to be looking out for our safety, is under the thumb of "big pharma" and does nothing to protect the consumer from, well, Big Pharma.

Here is a video that explains the problem by spotlighting just one ingredient...blueberries.

What can we do? Compare that to 38 percent of the general public using alternative, sometimes referred to as holistic, healing methods. The most striking finding is that doctors and nurses are more than twice as likely to use the services of an alternative health practitioner than health workers in other areas, such as technical and administrative departments.

These statistics arose from a survey conducted in 2007 under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health. Researchers at the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing with the Allina Health System in Minneapolis analyzed the findings and published their study in the journal Health Services Research.

Alternative health care, also referred to as complementary medicine, can include such areas as nutritional supplementation, diet, acupuncture, yoga, massage, chiropractic, herbal medicine, naturopathy, homeopathy and many other areas of interest. The researchers listed 36 types of care included in the study. The most common reasons given for seeking alternative care were back, neck and joint pain.

The study's leader noted that the prevalent belief has always been that alternative therapies aren't as well researched or evidence-based as traditional medical science, but that has changed in recent years. If medical professionals are taking advantage of alternative services more often, it should help people feel more comfortable discussing their needs, concerns and desires with their physicians.

Read the article:
http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=656106

Supplements Under Attack by the FDA - Again

They keep trying to criminalize the vitamin industry and if current efforts move forward, they may succeed this time. And who are "they?" For one, the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, along with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill), who has sponsored a bill in Congress that would drive this latest attack down our throats.

If that happens, all supplements formulated after 1994 will be required to undergo the FDA approval process, which typically takes years and costs millions of dollars to complete. That alone would put most vitamin companies out of business, which I believe is the purpose of this proposed legislation.

Since natural substances cannot be patented, there is no way the new requirements would ever lead to any approvals of nutritional supplements. This leaves only one alternative: a pharmaceutical industry takeover of all products, which would necessarily need to be artificial and synthetic. This is nothing short of a complete attack on every individual's ability, freedom and desire to be responsible for their own health.

A very good explanation of this can be found here:
http://www.anh-usa.org/dietary-supplement-labeling-act-a-huge-smokescreen/

Related articles

Dietary Supplements and FDA (healthcaredocs.wordpress.com)

Codex Alimentarius, WHO & FDA ??? (2012patriot.wordpress.com)

New Guidance for Dietary Supplement Manufacturers (innovationlawyr.wordpress.com)

FDA threat to your health: Vitamins, supplements and alternative health therapies as "medicinal" (ppjg.wordpress.com)

More Than Half of Americans Take Supplements - Do You? (fitsugar.com)

Lawsuit against FDA a success! The problem can range from a mild intolerance to a major allergy, and even the dreaded Celiac Disease.

This is not a trifling problem, and has been around for a lot longer than many realize. Like other allergies, until it's recognized for what it is, sufferers have had to endure a variety of diagnoses and treatments, often ineffective. I am one of them.

Gluten intolerance wasn't even a topic of anyone's conversations over 20 years ago when I was suffering from an unknown condition that left me with severe stomach and gut pain after eating.

Allergy testing at the time didn't even include gluten, so I was diagnosed (provisionally) with an ulcer. But the usual treatments had no effect at all and I continued to suffer. At times, I was simply afraid to eat and would go for days without a meal.

Finally, a friend casually mentioned that it was ironic that he was a wheat farmer but was allergic to his product!

Once my condition came into focus then, I learned how to deal with it by controlling my diet. Unfortunately, though this condition is becoming better understood now, it's still considered extremely controversial, as the skeptics refuse to accept its existence.

For now, as with all alternative health options, it's up to each of us to do our own research and personal experimentation to find what works best.

I have a chapter on gluten intolerance in my book, Alternative Healing Choices, available as an ebook as well as a Kindle version.

You can also search the Internet for information by using the search term, "gluten free." Many web sites have sprung up on this important topic, and you can find everything you need to know, including recipes.

Becoming a Healthy Eater Shouldn't be an "Alternative"

Being a healthy eater requires you to become both educated and smart about what healthy eating actually is. Being food smart isn't about learning to calculate grams or fat, nor is it about studying labels and counting calories.

Healthy eating is all about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy meals at least three times per day. Healthy eaters eat many different types of foods, not limiting themselves to one specific food type or food group.

Healthy eating is a way of life, something that you can do to enhance your body, your health, and your lifestyle, every day, not just during a "diet." If you've thought about making your life better, healthy eating is the place to start.

Fluoride Treatment... This Test Will Reveal if it's Harmful

As a parent, you want to do what is right for your child. Then why not trust your own eyes? Test the situation yourself.

If fluoridation is the correct thing to do, then this test will help to ease your fears. If it is not correct, this test may confirm that, too. In any case, living without fluoride for a week or even a month is not going to hurt anybody. If it is truly preventing cavities, your child will not suddenly develop even one due to the lack of fluoride for just one week, or even an entire month.

The test? By now you have probably figured it out: No flouride for at least a week.

To be certain that fluoride is removed as completely as possible from your diet, or your child's, be sure to monitor the diet religiously for the test period, whether you choose to try it for one week or one month.

Eliminate local drinking water and use either distilled water for drinking and cooking, or find bottled water which you are sure contains no fluoride. Also eliminate soda pop, fruit juices made from a concentrate, mouthwash, tea, fish, and of course, toothpaste. If you cannot find fluoride-free toothpaste, use baking soda.

Now watch your child closely for changes in personality, sleep habits, energy levels, appetite, mental acuity, skin condition, headaches, stomach aches, etc. Basically what you will be watching for is whether any problems disappear.

Don't start staring at your child on the first day. This could make them nervous and color your view of their reactions. Besides, it's too soon to notice anything. Wait a week, then stop and think about the above characteristics. If you are doing this for a month, take a look every week.

If you see absolutely no differences, then drop it and go back to what you were doing before. But watch to see if any changes occur then, too. If not, you may feel fluoride is not a threat in your life. Do what you feel is right.

But if you do see changes after eliminating the fluoride, it is possible this substance is responsible. To test that theory, return to the old routine and watch even more closely to see if symptoms return. If they do, remove the fluoride again. If they again disappear, you can be certain that fluoride is the culprit.

If you decide you now want to permanently eliminate fluoride from your lifestyle, you have to be diligent in selecting consumable products. It can be quite a challenge to find foods, drinks and oral hygiene products that do not contain fluoride.

Good luck.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alternativehealthquestions.blogspot.com/2010/07/time-to-stop-fluoridating-your-kids.html' title='Fluoride Treatment... It was a headline story on Yahoo news, just yesterday! (http://www.yahoo.com/s/1119597)

Researchers say they have identified certain potential functions of this "vestigial" organ, so classified by none other than Darwin himself, still revered as the father of the theory of evolution. And still revered as an authority! How many more of his theories must be debunked before that changes? Who knows... but that's another story, for another day, another web site, or another belief system. It doesn't matter.

The idea now is that the humble little appendix used to be more useful in days gone by to store bacteria that could help protect one's system in a world full of horrible infectious material... all cleaned up now, of course. (Believe that?)

The Industrial Revolution changed the world, and now, according to current thinking, we just don't have all that garbage around us, threatening our health. And in keeping with that idea, the appendix no longer has enough to do, so it sits quietly, doing little or nothing, until we might need its services. Trouble is, with its life of ease, it's become lazy and shrunken and now may not be up to the demand it used to handle, much like a healthy, well-muscled football player who has retired and gone flabby.

Well, this is just another chapter in the story of medical arrogance, in my opinion. As a chiropractor for more than 35 years, I can tell you that it's always been the opinion of most alternative health professionals that everything that appears in a normal, healthy body is there for a reason... even the appendix. Only medical arrogance proclaims uselessness when they can't explain something. In typical fashion, if the big shot docs can't find a function, then it doesn't exist.

Natural healers, on the other hand, don't know all the answers either, but we are content in knowing that everything is here for a reason, and as stewards of others' health, it is our responsibility to help our clients and patients recover and maintain their best health in order to foster their best functionality... even for organs and processes we may not fully comprehend.

The medical theories are full of holes, too. The assumption that our modern lifestyle has been cleaned up is a bit off the mark. How about those folks in Third World countries who are suffering because of poor sanitation due to Western influences that completely changed their native habitats? They contract some of the most horrific tropical diseases from being unprotected in environments that aren't exactly clean. I'll bet they have "useless" appendices, too. Or, why don't they have big fat busy ones?

When exactly did our lives become so easy? I know a lot of peole who aren't lying around sipping pina coladas and feeling so good. I hear there are still some slums in the big city, too.

Oh, life has changed, all right. Some things are worse... pollution, shrinking resources, adulterated food, chemical composites called food, genetically modified "food," enormous increases in drug use (legal or not), and adulteration of our internal and external environments with radiation and so-called remedial chemicals (such as fluoride).

None of those things have changed the basic condition of the appendix as we know it today. They might, in another 80 million years of evolution, but I don't think we're going to be here... unless our "leaders" stop ruining the planet. Again, another story, for another day....

But yes, the appendix is there for a reason. I knew that.

The Amazing Human Machine

The most amazing machinery in the world isn't a nuclear reactor, an electron microscope, or the next space vehicle. It is the human body.

We don't even have to know how it works for it to function correctly and smoothly... as long as we don't interfere with the normal processes that make life possible. If this weren't true, then human life would have died out with the cave man, if not sooner.

Now that a lot of time has passed and humans have become smarter, we do know a lot about our bodies.. how and why they work, and, especially important at times, how to fix them when necessary.

Unfortunately, along with that recent knowledge has come arrogance. People designated as "doctors" think they have all the answers and are the only humans among us who are qualified to fix each other. They even think they are the only ones who can, and should be allowed to, discuss human functionality. If a so-called "lay person" learns anatomy and physiology from a book, it's not good enough. Only "real" doctors can read medical books and understand them. Didn't you know that?

Learning about the body doesn't make it function; however, "doctors" want to have that control. God-like creatures that they think they are, they *must* exert this control and squash anyone who threatens or questions it.

The body is a self-repairing, self-aligning organism that can take care of a wide array of problems that occur while moving about through our different environments.

Break a bone... it knits back together. We can help that process by making sure the ends are aligned and that the area is immobilized during the healing process, but we can't make the cells do what they must do. We can stop them, and people often do, but the healing function is automatic, and internal.

Running a fever? Time to "burn off" a germ, perhaps. It's the built-in, natural way to do that. There weren't any anti-inflammatory berry bushes around during the early days of our kind. Or perhaps there were. It's probably lost information now, though.

The point is that our bodies can and do, and always have been able to, heal themselves, whether we know what we're doing or not. In fact, not knowing can be the best approach, so we don't get in our own way to restore our health. History is replete with stories, now laughable, of "experts" of the times inflicting popular remedies of the day that resulted only in hastening one's death. Sadly, that still happens.

The problem now is that humans have gotten so smart they think they know it all and have decided that any expression of healing has to be stopped. Why? Because they are so smart they interpret some healing activity as disease or sickness.

Why aren't we allowed to have a fever? Why can't muscle spasms be handled correctly? And lord help you if you sneeze.

To get a feel for how bad this has become, just watch television commercials. No matter how one feels, there is a drug for it, along with a brand new name for the condition to give it credence and official status as a disease.

Even feeling too good must be a disease, as they have drugs for that, too. It was called manic-depressive in the old days, now known as bipolar disease. Too happy? Take this drug. Depressed? Take this drug.

Legs feel restless? Here's a drug.

Sneezing is a very normal bodily response to clear respiratory passages, but sneezing is not allowed anymore. It's not bad enough that you need to be blessed to survive one, but nowadays, sneezing is considered the onset of a cold or something worse... but who knows what? Kill it before it multiplies.

Coughing? Not allowed. Headaches? Not allowed. Never mind that they are symptoms of an underlying condition. Turn off the alarms to put out the fire?

You're only allowed to live a dull, lifeless, robotic physical existence. Anything less or more requires a drug.

Is Menopause a Disease?

Since when did menopause become a disease? It's a natural event in the life of a woman, and always has been. If it becomes problematic, the most common reason is that something in the body has gone out of balance. Adding drugs to the mix doesn't achieve balance.

Drugs have become the panacea for the treatment of all things that don't feel good. If anything hurts, take a drug. If you feel blue, take a drug. If you feel "too good," must be bipolar... take a drug. Legs feel funny? Take a drug. Can't sleep? Take drug. Can't wake up enough to focus on anything? Stomach acid? Bowels clogged? Losing hair? Depressed? Can't get pregnant? Don't want to get pregnant? MENOPAUSE? Take a drug.

If you want to normalize a normal physiological function, there are natural things you can do. You don't have to poison the body with chemicals that were never meant to be in there.

Quick story: When I was in chiropractic college, in my 20s, an older female student entered that time of life called menopause. She was miserable. But instead of taking drugs, she visited our on-campus clinic every day and received daily chiropractic adjustments, plus some nutritional counseling. She not only lost a little weight, but her menopausal miseries disappeared.

I never forgot that, and when that time of life arrived for me, I did not rush to the M.D. to get some hormones. I visited a chiropractic colleague and received spinal realignments several times a week. As a result, I never suffered anything more serious than a few overheated nights, but nothing like night sweats. I had some of the typical hot flashes during the day, but they didn't last long. And I never had any cramping or bloating or any other things I'd heard women complain about.

And, as a practicing chiropractor myself, I helped many women in my age group work their way through a more normal menopause.... without drugs!

It can be done, but few will look into it. It's not very lucrative for the medical profession to promote natural healing.

Alternative Health - the Propaganda

Anyone born in the last 100 years or so has been exposed to medical propaganda, in an attempt (mostly successful, by the way) to force everyone to believe that allopathic medicine is the only effective way to treat disease.

Of course, "treat" disease is the operative word (pun intended) for allopathy. Anything natural, which allopathy is not, is about preventing disease in the first place, because the primary interest is in promoting Health, not disease. Allopathic medical practitioners are lost without something to treat. The concept of prevention is beyond their realm of understanding.

Allopathic care depends completely on identifying an enemy so they can fight it with a "cure." And all maladies have to have names so they can look them up in their catalogs of drugs.

That's why I call today's medical care a "catalog practice." If it's not in the catalog, they don't know what to do.

Just watch the commercials on television. It seems that every few weeks someone comes up with a new "disease" so they can sell a new drug.

Remember, in allopathic medicine, you can't sell a drug for something unless it has a name. This allows it to be cataloged and charged out on insurance billings. And those companies wouldn't pay any attention to a treatment that doesn't have a code number so they can look it up in their own catalog and agree or disagree with a price.

How about "RLS," Restless Leg Syndrome? Or here's a new one: Nonrestorative Sleep. And how about Dead Jaw Syndrome? Or PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease)?

Sure, you may suffer from any of these groupings of symptoms, but to call it a disease is extremely questionable. And to cover it up with a drug is even worse, especially since most of these problems are caused by drugs in the first place.

Amazingly, most people don't even expect their allopathic doctor to fix anything. As long as it has a name, they're happy. I've even heard people say, "Well, at least now we know what it is!" Somehow, this satisfies them.

Alternative Health... It's All Backward!

In my opinion, what is known as "alternative health" today should be mainstream, while traditional allopathic medical care should be relegated to alternative status. In other words, things are backward.

For all the time humans have been on this planet, food was organic (no chemicals, radiation or genetic modification to make them grow bigger or faster to facilitate profits). Plants provided a large part of any "drug" treatment, and of course, pollution was seldom an issue. At least not significantly until the Industrial Age began.

Well, everything changed in the last couple hundred years, with the most drastic and worst changes taking place in the last 100.

Sure, many things are better: discovery of germs so we can deal with that, the "aha" awakening that cleanliness did more for the eradication of certain diseases than any vaccines, pills or potions, and the vast new knowledge of physiology and anatomy, along with the technology that allows better treatment of injuries and birth defects.

Certainly the medical profession has made huge strides in disease classification, identification and description, but it's all off balance. Many of them are virtually clueless about how to prevent or treat disease, naturally or any other way. They are all about covering up symptoms, not addressing causes. They are about sickness, not health.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alternativehealthquestions.blogspot.com/2008/09/alternative-health-its-all-backward.html' title='Alternative Health... (When I graduated from Chiropractic College, my grandmother asked me to cut her toenails. And no, I refused to do it.) This is the kind of thing that explains why we now know Chiropodists as Podiatrists, and Chiropractors have an uphill battle keeping their titles spelled correctly.

We who hold the D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) degree are CHIROPRACTORS, and we practice CHIROPRACTIC. That's it. There are no alternative spellings, no other terms used. And no, we are not "CHOIR" Practors, either. (One year, I sent out Christmas cards with a church choir on the front of the card. Inside it said, 'Merry Christmas from your Choir Practor.' I'm sure not everyone got the joke.)

Increasingly, however, our profession does use the term, Chiropractic Physician. Technically, that's not quite right either, but on the other technical hand, it is more correct than the other ridiculous-sounding names.

It's such a simple matter to use a dictionary and is one method I highly recommend when someone needs to use a term they may not be very familiar with... even if they just think they are.

Alternative Health could mean "do it yourself" after all

I want to tell you something that might save your life.
It's something that probably will never happen to you, but this story has some built-in lessons that could apply to other situations as well as the one described.

This will not be a lecture about eating right, losing weight, or getting regular checkups. This is about doing your homework. You see, most people are under a spell, created by all those authority figures in our lives who have led us to believe that there are smarter and better educated people around us who will always be there to take care of us if something goes wrong. All we have to do is call on the right one.

But it's a huge myth... a very dangerous myth.

And the biggest myth of all of them is the one about health. The largest percentage of our population has been thoroughly brainwashed to believe that the final answer to all things health-related can be solved or handled only by the medical profession.

But contrary to this popular myth, doctors are NOT gods. Get over that right now or you could easily become their next victim.

OK, here's what's happening... right now... as I write this: Someone I know very well has been exposed to the rabies virus.

We are both heavily involved in the animal care field and see animals in various stages of health, and often, in a state of disease. We are exposed to many risks, so it's just a matter time for the law of averages to catch up with us on something dangerous.

Dealing with unwanted, abandoned, abused, wild or otherwise compromised animals that will never make good pets leads us to have to make decisions, for the protection of the humans involved, or for the animals' own relief in some cases. This means some of them will be euthanized, and handling them during this time can be risky.

Exposure to rabies is one such problem. Wild animals, or abandoned pets that have supposedly gone wild, are very vulnerable to contracting this extremely fatal disease.

It affects all mammals (yes, you are a mammal, too), all over the world (except in those few locations that have eradicated it or have never had it).

Now here is where things become problematic. What would you do if your child had been exposed to the virus? Why, you'd go to the doctor or the hospital, right?

Why? Because you believe they will know what to do, right?

Well, try this on: What if they're WRONG? Or don't know what to do? My colleague could become a victim of our faulty health care system and could die. The only thing that has been done correctly so far, is that the animal has been tested and found positive for rabies.

Now that that has been established, the human victim, who I'll call Jane Doe for the sake of anonymity at her request, must undergo the dreaded rabies treatment.

One would think that a hospital would know what that means. One would think that a doctor would know, too. However, if they have only read about it in books during school, they probably won't know what to do in the real world.

Such is the case with Jane Doe at the moment. So far, she has been asked to go pick up the vaccine and bring it in so they can administer it.

She has been given the wrong vaccination schedule, which must be done correctly to get proper, life-saving results.

She had to call the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to get the correct information, which she printed off and took to the hospital to prove to them that they had misinformed her. Did they say thank you? Oh no... they are still angry that she has challenged their superior knowledge and abilities. Typical responses include: "Oh? What medical school did you go to?" and sarcastically, "Are you a doctor?" followed by a lot of heavy sighing and eye-rolling.

In effect they are saying, "What gives you the right to find out what's correct so you can save your own life?"

They finally gave her the first injection, but the second one is a different product and must be given at about the same time, or the first one is useless. The hospital is sorry, but they don't have access to that other product and don't know when it will be available.

The burden has been placed totally and squarely on Jane's own shoulders.

Now, the lesson here is this:

If you want your own scary health emergencies to come out right, you had better know what is going on and how it is correctly treated. If you have only some blind faith in one of those white-coated "gods" in your town, you might not come out alive.

In other words.... do your homework, people! Doctors are NOT gods. Neither are nurses. Wearing white with a stethoscope placed fashionably around the neck does not confer omniscience... or even the most basic competence.

Get over it now, or you could be sorry.

With the wealth of information available on the Internet now, there is NO excuse to remain ignorant. Medical people have always enjoyed intimidating people into submission and acceptance, and until now, that has been relatively easy. Now it's much harder, so expect them to try harder in putting you "in your place."

Bottom line: Do your homework, question anyone who wants to subject you to anything, and don't be afraid to stand up for what's right. Your life may depend on it! Really!

Which Alternative Health Care Method Should You Use?

As we become a more and more global community, we learn of each others' health care philosophies and experiences. And we can only benefit from this sharing of ideas and methodologies.

There is no one particular health care method that solves all problems for all individuals, but rather, a comprehensive approach can be seen to achieve the greatest good by embracing as many protocols as may be necessary for a particular situation or condition.

Medically, the "shoot the attacker" approach to health care is really only a "shoot the messenger" philosophy.

Symptoms are "treated," when using a medical approach. But addressing causes is the only truly effective method that can return a failing body to a state of normalcy, or well-being.

Just What is Alternative Health Care?

According to the dictionary, "alternative" means "choice."

Theoretically, then, alternative health care means we have many methods and fields of practice from which to choose. However, within the mainstream traditional medical community, the philosophy is that "alternative" means unorthodox - or perhaps even quackery.

They forget that they once were considered quacks themselves. Dentistry was performed by barbers, and only midwives delivered babies. Surgeons proudly wore smears of blood on their gowns from the day's line-up of patients, and bathing was considered wasteful and unhealthy.

The medical profession has come a long way since then, and they have accomplished much in the way of effective disease management, surgical technique, and development of a vast documentation of health conditions. Their research has been, and continues to be, unequalled in depth and breadth.

However, it's still primarily one-sided. The official position is that current medical care and thinking are singularly responsible for all health care - or should be. Alternative, or "other" choices for health care are to be avoided, shunned, eliminated if possible, and at the least, discredited as the useless babbling of charlatans and con artists only out for money. (Has anyone checked the latest costs for hospitalization... or drugs.... or office visits lately?)

But we live in the Information Age now, and it's becoming little excuse to claim ignorance of other methods of caring for ourselves, our families, and our friends.

Free Report on Chiropractic

I wrote this report not too long ago and would like to share it with you. It's a brief, but I hope concise, background on how chiropractic started and evolved into what we use today.

I believe chiropractic is the premier form of "alternative health care" and has some of the most amazing benefits to our healthy lifestyles as anything else you can do.

Of course, being healthy has more to to do with a comprehensive approach to life, which can include proper diet, exercise, attitude and many other forms of alternative lifestyle changes. And I will bring many of those up as this column progresses... or as I have time, I should say.

But today, please feel free to download my report on chiropractic. It doesn't mean I have all the answers... not sure anyone does... but I have a lot of experience working with people over the last 30 years or so, as we pursued different ways to achieve better health, focusing, of course, on natural means. My background as a chiropractor has provided me with an educational perspective for the natural approaches, and my years in practice have given me firsthand experience with results, responses and reactions from people (plus a few animals...no, not experiments... my pets).

I have always tried to be diplomatic and usually found myself treading lightly around current, traditional methods and beliefs so as not to irritate or annoy anyone. But I'm retired now, so it doesn't matter so much anymore. If anything I say annoys you, you know what to do. It's called clicking to another site. But I would suggest, rather, that any "new" ideas be investigated before being tossed as trash. One thing I've noticed in the last 30 years is that many procedures or concepts introduced by alternative doctors, such as chiropractors... including myself... are now considered mainstream. Funny how we thought of those things first, but now that the "real" doctors say it's OK, it's finally OK.

From time to time, I will also tell you about the latest health news, as I hear about it, and I'll also tell you about some interesting, fantastic or just plain useful stuff you might want to look into for yourself.

See you here again soon!
